Following recent announcements by the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH), Unilabs has had to adapt its billing process for vitamin D prescriptions.

As announced in our previous communication, since 1 July 2022, reimbursement for the 25-hydroxy-vitamin D and 25-OH-vitamin D2, D3 tests has been restricted to specific clinical situations. The list of eligible indications is available on the FOPH website or in the analysis profile on e-unilabs.

Separate billing according to reimbursement status

When there is a clinical indication, meaning that the patient has or is suspected of having one of the conditions listed by the FOPH, the test will be billed to the health insurance provider for reimbursement, up to once every three months.

When the test is prescribed for screening purposes and the reimbursement criteria are not met, the analysis will be handled under a separate case and the invoice will be sent directly to the patient.

Please note that a clinical justification is required for the test to be covered by health insurance.

If no clinical indication is provided, non-reimbursed screening will be applied by default.

Informing patients

Physicians must inform their patients about these reimbursement limitations when prescribing the test.
