Hematopathology

In 2009, Unilabs established a specialised hematopathology department.

Hematopathology diagnostics are generally performed in hospital laboratories. Unilabs is among the first private laboratories to offer a comprehensive range of tests in this field throughout Switzerland.

Due to the specific nature of the samples, particular attention must be paid to pre-analytical conditions. The shipment of blood smears, biopsies and blood samples requires appropriate handling measures.

We therefore recommend contacting Unilabs before sample collection to ensure optimal conditions for sample preparation, transport and analysis.

Onco-Hematology

The diagnostic process in onco-hematology relies on the combination of several specialised techniques, particularly flow cytometry and molecular biology.

Flow Cytometry

Our team follows expert recommendations for the analysis of different cell populations.

We use state-of-the-art flow cytometers that enable the simultaneous analysis of multiple parameters, including 10-colour systems.

Flow cytometry is an essential tool for characterising cell populations and contributes to the diagnosis of numerous hematological disorders.

Molecular Biology

Diagnostic, prognostic and classification analyses are performed in accordance with international recommendations, including those of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Monitoring of residual disease may include:

  • BCR-ABL monitoring according to the International Scale

  • PML-RARA monitoring by Q-PCR

  • Other specific molecular markers depending on the condition concerned

Prognostic assessment may also be based on different molecular markers, such as:

  • TP53 mutations

  • VH gene mutational status in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia, in accordance with ERIC recommendations

  • Other specific mutations or alterations depending on the condition

Our test catalogue is regularly updated to include new markers that are important for diagnosis and prognosis, including:

  • CALR

  • SF3B1

  • CSF3R

  • SETBP1

  • HUMARA

Our specialists also use advanced genomic technologies, including Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), to complement diagnosis and prognostic assessment.

Hemoglobinopathies

Hemoglobinopathies are diagnosed using a stepwise approach based on the different tests available in our portfolio.

Initial Screening

The initial assessment may include:

  • Screening for abnormal hemoglobins

  • Screening for β-thalassemia

  • HbF measurement

  • HbA2 measurement

  • HPLC

  • Hemoglobin isoelectric focusing

Additional Tests

Depending on the initial screening results, further tests may be considered:

  • Hemoglobin electrophoresis at acidic pH

  • Sickle cell test

  • Inclusion body testing

  • Isopropanol stability test

  • Testing for α-, β- or δ-thalassemia by sequencing the alpha, beta and delta genes

  • Identification of abnormal hemoglobin by sequencing the alpha, beta and delta genes

  • DNA extraction and banking for future analyses

Coagulation

The Unilabs coagulation laboratory offers a wide range of tests, including:

  • Platelet function testing

  • Diagnosis of predisposition to thrombosis

  • Investigation of bleeding disorders

  • Monitoring of anticoagulant therapy

  • Monitoring of antiplatelet therapy
