COVID-19 PCR Test
Detection of SARS-CoV-2 by PCR
The PCR test detects the presence of SARS-CoV-2 from an appropriate sample.
It may be performed in particular:
When there is a medical indication
When testing is required in a specific context
To meet certain administrative or travel requirements, where these still apply
Sample collection
Depending on the centre and the indication, the sample may be collected using:
Throat swab
Nasopharyngeal swab
Another sampling method offered by the centre
An appointment may be required depending on the collection centre.
Results
Results are generally communicated electronically, including by SMS or through the communication channels available at Unilabs.
Any stated turnaround times are for information only and may vary depending on when the sample is received, laboratory capacity and specific circumstances.
Prices and reimbursement
Coverage of the test depends on the medical indication, applicable regulations and your insurance coverage.
When the test is not covered by insurance, the cost must be paid by the patient.
For current conditions, please contact your doctor, health insurance provider or Unilabs collection centre.
COVID-19 Serology Test
Determine your antibody levels
The COVID-19 serology test detects and measures antibodies against SARS-CoV-2.
It is performed using a blood sample.
Serology may provide information about the presence of antibodies following a previous infection or vaccination.
Who is it for?
The test may be considered for:
Adults
Children, depending on the indication
People who have previously had COVID-19
Vaccinated individuals
Patients for whom a serological assessment is medically indicated
A serology result must always be interpreted in its clinical context.
The presence of antibodies alone cannot determine with certainty the level or duration of protection against a new infection.

Results
Results are communicated through the channels available at Unilabs.
Turnaround time may vary depending on the laboratory, the day the sample is collected and the type of analysis requested.
Reimbursement
Coverage of a serology test depends on the indication and the conditions defined by the health insurance provider.
When the test is performed without an indication that qualifies for reimbursement, the cost must be paid by the patient.
Which test should I choose?
PCR test
The PCR test directly detects the presence of SARS-CoV-2 and may be used when an active infection is suspected or when direct detection of the virus is required.
Serology test
The serology test detects antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in the blood.
In certain situations, it may be used to assess a previous immune response, but it does not replace direct virus detection when an active infection is being investigated.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an appointment for a PCR test?
Depending on the centre, an appointment may be required. Check the information for your selected collection centre before travelling.
What should I bring?
The required documents may vary depending on the type of test and its indication. Please bring identification and, when required, your medical prescription.
When will I receive my result?
Turnaround time depends on the type of analysis, the centre and when the sample arrives at the laboratory.
Any turnaround times communicated by Unilabs are estimates and not guarantees.
Do I need a test before travelling?
Entry requirements vary by country and may change over time.
Before travelling, always check the official requirements with the relevant authorities, embassy or consulate of your destination country.
Does a positive serology test mean I am protected?
The presence of antibodies indicates that an immune response has been detected. However, this alone does not guarantee protection against a new infection or determine precisely how long that protection may last.
Ask your doctor for advice on interpreting your result.
